Begin your adventure with a scenic drive up to the Remarkables Ski Field. Sit back and enjoy panoramic views across Queenstown from comfort of your own Land Rover Discovery or Mercedes van.
Begin your hiking adventure from the ski area base building (1600m or 5250ft) before embarking on a steady climb to Shadow Basin. Traverse across the rugged ridge line, through alpine fields and over glacial streams before making the final approach to Lake Alta.
Crystal-clear Lake Alta is a pristine glacial lake tucked up in the mountain range, hidden under a thick blanket of snow and ice throughout the winter. It’s appeared in many films including Vertical Limit, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
Pause to take in the tranquillity of this remote alpine wilderness and enjoy spectacular views across the Wakatipu Valley at the highest point of this walk. Keep an eye out for local wildlife including our cheeky kea, the world’s only alpine parrot (native to New Zealand), chamois and deer.
